Guest Speaker Bob Schieffer from CBS News

Fairfax, Va- It is a rare privilege to be is the presence of greatest. This certainly how the students of Professor Steve Klein’s Online Journalism Class at George Mason University feel about who they spoke to last Thursday afternoon, February 25. These young, aspiring journalist had the privilege of speaking to legendary journalist Bob Schieffer of CBS News. Schieffer has covered many historical events such as the JFK assassination and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

With these experiences, he was able to give the future generation of journalists insight into the ever changing landscape of journalism. “You always have to check your facts”, says Schieffer, “especially when your facts come from the internet.” This is vital advice for journalist in the year 2010. The internet is flooded with news, so it’s important to make sure that the news stories on it are checked for accuracy. Schieffer also believe that journalism will change greatly over the next several years, mostly due to the advances in technology.

For these students, being given the chance to ask questions and receive answers from a journalist of Schieffer’s caliber may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. The reaction from students after speaking with Schieffer were more than positive. “It was a great opportunity to talk to such a great journalist” says Chanel Dority, a student in Klein’s class, “his experience is something to admire.”

Indeed, being one of best can sometimes start from learning from one of the best. And now, future journalists from George Mason University know this first hand.

Guest Speaker Jim Ioveno From NBC News 4

Fairfax, Va- Jim Ioveno from NBC News 4 spoke to Professor Steve Klein’s Online Journalism class on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at George Mason University. With the way news coverage has been changing  over the last several years, Ioveno was able supple examples of how the students could use new technologies while covering news stories. Take, for example, the snow storms several weeks ago that left schools closed for a week or more and many a households and college dorms with cabin fever. Ioveno showed the class how he had covered the storm. No, he did not have a camera crew. No, he did not have edited film with impressive graphics. “I had my flip cam.”, said Ivoneno, “I just turned it on and started recording and talking about what I saw”.

It was not a high definition video. Rather, the quality of the video was such as you would find on web sites such as Youtube. The point of his speech was not to impress the students with how well he could shoot and edit a video. He wanted to show that there are many tools you can use to report the news that anyone can use. So was his point well taken? According to sophomore  Britni Petersen, it was. “I like that you can use a simple tool like the flip cam to report a story”, says Petersen, “it’s good that we as journalist can use these tools to report news.”

His experience in the news world with out a doubt helped the class of young expiring journalist better understand how to use tools to better their coverage of news stories.
